How to improve your skin this year
New year, new you, right? If complexion goals are on your resolution list, you’ll need a good game plan. Celebrity dermatologist and Chief Medical Officer of LaserAway, Dr. Will Kirby, is here to share his top three tips for improving your skin fitness this year:
1. Barrier protection
What is barrier protection? As the name suggests, it’s a barrier between you and the sun. Both bright and incidental sun exposure are terrible for your skin, leading to premature aging, such as sunspots, fine lines, and wrinkles. You can create a physical barrier against the sun by wearing long sleeves, a hat with a big brim, and sunglasses.
2. Broad-spectrum SPF
You should wear an SPF 50 or higher on all exposed areas of skin every single day. Apply it liberally to the face and neck areas as well as the forearms and hands — you want to be sure to apply at least an ounce of sunblock to adequately cover those areas. Put it on early in the morning to protect your skin throughout the day.
3. Retinol products
Most dermatologists agree that, to prevent premature aging, you should use a retinol skincare product every night. Why? Because retinoids increase cell turnover, resulting in smoother, softer, and more supple skin. It takes roughly six-to-eight weeks of consistent use before you’ll begin to notice results.
