You’re not alone. Spider veins are quite common, in fact.
Many women experience unsightly spider veins on their thighs and legs. Luckily there are several non-invasive treatments available to help you combat unsightly spider veins, wherever they might be on your body. We’re here to give you the lowdown on everything there is to know about spider veins, including how to get rid of them for good!
What Are Spider Veins Anyway?
Spider veins are small blood vessels that tend to be red, purple, and blue. They twist and turn, and are easily visible through the skin, especially on thighs and legs. It’s estimated that over 80% of women suffer from unsightly spider veins. Unfortunately, spider veins are hereditary and become more common as you get older.
Some other risk factors for spider veins include:
- Lack of movement
- Hormonal changes
- Medical history
- Sun exposure
Yes, You Can Stop Them From Getting Worse
If you already have some spider veins but want to stop them from getting worse, there are a few things you can do to prevent new ones from forming:
- Relieve pressure. You’ll want to lessen the pressure bearing down on your legs by keeping your weight down, and avoiding standing and sitting for long periods of time. Make sure to also avoid crossing your legs while you’re sitting.
- Keep moving. You’ll want to exercise your legs regularly by walking or running. This will help to increase leg circulation, reducing the risk of forming spider veins.
- Compression stockings. If your job requires you to be on your feet, then you might want to invest in some compression stockings, which can help prevent new spider veins from cropping up. You can buy compression stockings at most drug stores.
- Prop up your feet. While you’re sitting down, you should try to elevate your feet, which will prevent spider vein formation.
- Wear sunblock! Sun exposure can lead to spider veins anywhere on your body, so it’s important to slather on sunblock before going outside.
If your spider veins are particularly unsightly and noticeable, there are two different med spa procedures available that can help diminish their appearance:
IPL Photo Facials
IPL photo facials work by using a broad-spectrum light source that penetrates multiple layers of skin. This type of photo facial primarily targets the lower layers of skin (dermis) while leaving the top layers of skin (epidermis) unaffected. The heat generated from the light promotes healing of the skin within, treating a number of different dermatological issues, such as spider veins.
If you want to dramatically diminish the appearance of spider veins, you must be diligent about scheduling treatment sessions. IPL photo facial treatments call for five treatment sessions spaced three weeks apart to obtain desired results. In some cases, those results can be seen after only the first treatment! And skin continues to improve with each successive treatment.
Laser resurfacing works like this: light energy is delivered through a special laser handpiece to the targeted vein in a series of short pulses. The blood vessels then absorb the light energy, leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. This heat absorption causes a coagulation of the blood vessel, which is subsequently absorbed by your body – and voilà – the spider veins are gone!
What’s a laser resurfacing treatment like? First, the doctor identifies the veins to be treated. Then they proceed to deliver pulses of laser light energy along the length of the vessel starting with the largest veins first. The treatment session doesn’t last very long, and most patients report little discomfort. However, some do experience a mild burning sensation as the laser is being pulsed. The number of laser treatments needed depends on the size and depth of each spider vein. For optimal results, multiple treatments may be necessary, spaced three to four weeks apart.
