The South Beach Diet’s three phases

The South Beach Diet consists of three phases designed to kick your cravings, jumpstart your weight loss, and maintain your health.

On the South Beach Diet, you’ll enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, two snacks, and even dessert. Plus, it has the added health benefits of lowering cholesterol, stabilizing blood sugar, and increasing cardiovascular health. In other words, it keeps you satiated.

Phase One

Phase One is designed to kick your cravings for processed carbohydrates and sugars. It’s the most restrictive phase of the South Beach Diet, and it lasts two weeks. You can expect to lose between five and ten pounds during this phase. It includes:

  • Proteins such as beef, poultry, seafood, eggs, and cheese
  • Select fats like olive oil and avocadoes
  • Low glycemic index carbs like broccoli, tomatoes, spinach, and eggplant

You’re not allowed to eat fruit, starchy foods, dairy products, and alcohol.

Phase Two

Phase Two is where the real weight loss happens. You’re slowly reintroduced to healthy carbs such as fruit, whole grains, and sweet potatoes during this phase. You can expect to lose between one and two pounds per week, and phase two lasts until you’ve reached your goal weight.

Phase Three

Phase Three is all about maintenance. There’s no food list to follow. You should be familiar with healthy food choices by this time and get back on track when you feel the need.

The best thing about the South Beach Diet is that it’s practical and uncomplicated  you don’t have to count calories or figure out percentages. It’s also okay to break the rules every now and then. Most dishes are easy to make, and snacking is effortless, too.
