How to get your skin & hair ready for the beach
Summer’s scorching temps will have you wanting to show off all your assets. But you’ll want to be prepared to take on all that heat, salty water and sand. Follow these 10 grooming tips for a great beach season:
1. Remove unwanted hair
If you’re interested in cleaning up any unwanted hair, consider your removal options. “Waxing removes hair from the root,” Fashionista notes, “which keeps your skin hair-free for around 2-3 weeks.” Undergoing a series of laser hair removal sessions can offer a more permanent solution, reducing your body hair by up to 80%.
2. Exfoliate the skin
Skin looks its best when it’s healthy and hydrated, not rough or dry. Focus on eliminating dead skin on any visible body part — your arms, legs, thighs, feet, ankles. For a quick DIY exfoliant combine one cup of sugar with 1/2 cup of olive oil and the juice of one lemon. Massage the mixture into clean, damp skin. The sugar exfoliates as the olive oil moisturizes. The lemon juice brightens your skin, improving your complexion.
3. Try lymphatic massage
After a long season of curling up indoors, your body may be retaining excess fluid. Lymphatic drainage is a form of gentle massage that encourages the movement of lymph fluids around the body aka what moves build up and toxins out of your system. Lymphatic massage has a ton of amazing health benefits including minimizing the appearance of cellulite and helping the body look and feel more contoured.
4. Get a pedicure
You may want to show your toes some love if you plan on wearing sandals or going barefoot. Begin by soaking your feet in warm, soapy water for 30 minutes. Then gently scrub them using a pumice stone in a circular motion. Rinse with cold water and towel-dry. Slather on some foot cream, and wrap your feet in plastic wrap so that the oils and moisturizers penetrate your skin’s outer layer. Remove the plastic wrap, and then put on clean socks and wear them overnight.
5. Deep-condition your hair
“Try a natural deep conditioning treatment once a week to get that extra bit of moisture into your hair,” Treehugger recommends. Salt water and high heat can do a number on your locks. You may want to consider a hair sunscreen, too!
6. Apply a self-tanner
This will give you color without risk of sun damage. “Use a gradual tanner … so that you can monitor your tan and avoid going overboard,” Hello recommends. Also, be sure to get help from a friend to avoid orange streaks or white patches.
7. Find a sunscreen you love
Consistently using broad-spectrum sunblock with SPF 50+ before going out into the sun helps to prevent premature aging and skin damage. Make sure to apply sunblock especially formulated for your face to avoid breakouts.
