4 Common Appearance Issues for New Mothers — and How to Fix Them

Post-pregnancy skin concerns

Being a new mom poses challenges. Some of them may leave you feeling slightly less lovely than you’re used to. Here’s how to fix some post-pregnancy challenges and get back to beautiful.

Hyperpigmentation

During your pregnancy, you may have developed areas of blotchy skin, especially if you normally have a darker complexion. They tend to show up on your upper lip, nose, cheekbones, and forehead. This is known as the mask of pregnancy, and it’s triggered by hormonal changes. Sun exposure plays a role as well.

The good news is that IPL photo facials can help you get rid of such hyperpigmentation. Nonsurgical, noninvasive, photo facials transform skin from the inside out by gently resurfacing its top layer. The surrounding skin replaces itself with healthier tissue. After three to five laser resurfacing sessions, you’ll notice that your hyperpigmentation has vanished, and you’ll also notice smoother younger-looking skin.

Weight gain

Most pregnant women gain between 25 and 35 pounds. It may take months to shed this much weight with diet and exercise. And sometimes stubborn fat deposits remain. Nonetheless, it’s extremely important that you try to take this weight off as soon as possible because it has been associated with obesity later in life. Load up on superfoods and avoid crash dieting. And breastfeeding your baby can also help you burn an additional 300 calories per day.

Stubborn fat deposits call for CoolSculpting. A treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate unwanted fat cells, CoolSculpting is a gentle, non-surgical, and non-invasive alternative to liposuction that works on almost any desired area. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting technology precisely targets these fat cells and delivers a controlled cooling effect that crystallizes them. The fat cells die, and over time your body eliminates them. Each CoolSculpting session results in a 20% reduction in fat cells. You’ll see visible results as soon as three weeks after your first treatment, but the most dramatic results will appear after a couple of months. And your body will continue to flush fat cells for four to six months after treatment.

Fine lines and wrinkles

Let’s face it. Being a new mom involves a lot of stress. Combine that with a perpetual lack of sleep and poor nutrition, and your skin probably won’t be looking its best. It’s common for new moms to neglect themselves, especially when it comes to preventing premature aging. Not wearing sunscreen on a daily basis is the number one culprit, so it’s essential that you always take the time to apply some to your face first thing in the morning. Because of hormonal changes, many new moms also notice increased acne and blotchiness, which can cause them to look older. Be sure to always cleanse and moisturize your skin twice a day.

A non-invasive skin treatment that reverses the early signs of aging, Clear + Brilliant encourages new collagen growth, which boosts skin tone, smooths texture, and shrinks pores. It creates millions of microscopic treatment zones, replacing damaged skin with healthy, younger-looking tissue. The result is a youthful glow. Most women notice brighter, softer, and more youthful skin as soon as a week after treatment. With multiple treatments age spots, fine lines, and wrinkles fade and soften.

Loose tummy skin

The most common appearance issue for new moms is loose tummy skin. To tighten it, begin by losing any extra baby weight. Then, engage in strength training exercises at the gym. Be sure to lose weight slowly. If you lose it too fast, you’ll make the loose skin worse.

If diet and exercise aren’t working the desired effect, you should consider Thermage. A noninvasive procedure that dramatically tightens skin after only one treatment, Thermage works from the inside out, transferring heat to the outer skin layer (epidermis) and causing collagen to contract and gradually reform. Because outer layers of the skin are unaffected, there is almost no recovery period. And the effects can last years.

Confidence returned

Being a new mother is challenging. It requires drastic changes in your schedule, and it can especially take a toll on your appearance and self-esteem. Luckily, these challenges can be overcome. All it takes is finding the right fixes and getting them.
