Thermage myths and facts
Thanks to recent technological advances in the field of aesthetic dermatology, there are many safe and effective non-invasive and minimally-invasive alternatives to traditional cosmetic surgery. One such treatment is Thermage, which uses radiofrequency technology to tighten loose skin on the face, neck, and body. If you aren’t too familiar with Thermage but want to know more, let’s separate the facts from common myths floating around on the internet:
1. Thermage can only be used on the face
One of the coolest things about Thermage is that it can tighten loose skin not only on the face but also on different areas of the body, such as the neck, chest, stomach, arms, hands, derriere, and thighs. Thermage reduces the appearance of hooding around the eyes, softens lines and wrinkles by restructuring collagen, and tightens skin on the areas of the body you want to target while temporarily improving the appearance of cellulite.
2. Thermage is painful
There is a tiny bit of truth to this myth. Since Thermage uses heat to stimulate new collagen in the deepest layers of your skin, it’s only slightly more uncomfortable than treatments that deliver heat to superficial layers of the skin, such as IPL photo facials. Most patients notice a brief heating sensation when the device’s tip touches their skin, followed by a cooling sensation that helps protect the skin and minimize any discomfort.
3. You’ll notice immediate results
While you might notice improvements immediately after a Thermage procedure, the best results will appear gradually in the three to six months following a single treatment. This is because Thermage works from the inside out, using radio frequency technology to target the deeper collagen-rich layers of the skin, causing collagen to contract and gradually reform.
4. Thermage melts fat
This is a common misconception. Thermage doesn’t melt fat, but it does tighten saggy skin and improve the appearance of wrinkles by causing the collagen in the skin to contract. This results in a tighter, firmer, smoother, and more youthful appearance. However, if you do have your heart set on fat reduction, we highly recommend CoolSculpting!
5. Results are permanent
Results from a single Thermage treatment are not permanent, but they are long-lasting. Many patients only need one treatment to achieve results. However, depending on your age, skin condition, and degree of skin elasticity, you may choose to consider a second treatment to obtain your desired results, as well as maintenance treatments every couple of years.
