7 Expert Beauty and Skincare Tips for the Gym

The essential gym beauty guide

Should you skip the makeup? Is it better to rinse off at the gym? Lisa Asuncion, Vice President of Sales at LaserAway and an IFBB Pro Bikini Competitor, shares seven tips on how to care for your skin before and after working out:

1. Drink enough water

Before hitting up the gym, you should make sure you bring plenty of water. Not only will this help you keep hydrated throughout your workout, but staying hydrated will also keep your skin supple, soft, and clear.

2. Wash your face

If you’re going straight to the gym from work, you should cleanse your skin before working out. Always carry a pack of makeup wipes along with a travel size version of your favorite facial cleanser. After cleansing your skin, apply a light moisturizer as well as SPF 50 sunscreen or higher to protect your skin.

3. Put your hair up in a ponytail

To avoid getting dirt, oil, and sweat on your face during your workouts, be sure to put your hair up in a ponytail. This will help to keep your skin free of blemishes and your hair as clean as possible since it’s swept up off your neck.

4. Apply minimal cosmetics

Who doesn’t want to look good during workouts? Keep your lips moisturized while you exercise by applying a moisturizing lip oil beforehand. You can also sport waterproof mascara and water-resistant eyebrow gel. Skip heavy makeup since your pores will be opening up as your body heats up.

5. Use the right gym towel

Not all towels are created equal. Using the right gym towel can be the difference from getting that sweat off your face and rubbing bacteria all around. Antimicrobial and hypoallergenic towels work to break down germs and stop the spread of potential irritants.

6. Wash your face…again!

You should always cleanse your skin immediately after working out to prevent breakouts. Cleansing after your workout removes any bacteria and sweat residue from sinking back into your pores. Who doesn’t like a cool splash of water after a good workout anyway?

7. Use dry shampoo in a pinch

If you don’t have time to wash your hair right after going to the gym, refresh it instantly using some dry shampoo. This product is likely already your BFF on late mornings, but it’s also perfect post-workout to soak up all the oil and sweat.
