7 Tricks for Dating as a Single Mom

Dating can be challenging. But, it can be even more challenging if you’re also raising a kid. To help navigate the complexities of the online dating world, here are seven tricks for dating as a single mom:

1. Make an effort

Because parenting is a full-time job, it can be difficult making dating a priority. It’s easy to sit back and stay inside for the evening, but make that extra effort to go out. Sometimes scheduling a date is easier if you can bring your kid along.

2. See if he works well with your family

Single moms should determine if potential partners would work well with their families. Envision the kind of family you have and the kind of family you want to find out if a possible match is right for you.

3. Let go of expectations

Since single moms already have kids, they shouldn’t feel pressured to meet someone to have a family with — instead, just look for someone you enjoy being around.

4. Talk on the phone first

Talking on the phone before meeting up in person is a useful screening tool. If you are still up for meeting someone after you have screened them, then chances are, you won’t be unpleasantly surprised.

5. Trust your gut

Always listen to your gut — if your instincts are telling you something is off, be sure to listen to them.

6. Wait to introduce kids

Because kids start to bond almost immediately, you should wait to introduce them to dating partners. If your children are older, give them the space to warm up to your partners.

7. Don’t feel guilty

If you feel guilty about leaving your kids at home while you go on a date, don’t. You also need time alone to go out and enjoy yourself.

Live a little

The most important thing when dating as a single mom is to keep your balance. If you happen to fall in love with a guy, don’t abandon your kids by spending all your free time with your new partner. With the right strategies, dating can be fun and empowering. Don’t forget to live a little!
