9 Ways to Summer-Proof Your Skin

How to protect your skin this summer

With all that glorious sunshine come heat and UV rays that can lead to skin damage and premature aging, which is why your skin needs to be treated differently in summer. Here are nine ways you can protect your skin in summer.

1. Use lip balm

Your lips are delicate. The sun dries them out. Keep them looking luscious by applying all-natural lip balm. Make sure your lip balm has an SPF of 15 or greater. Don’t be afraid to slather it on. And keep doing so throughout the day.

2. Take cool showers

It’s strange but true: After you’ve been in the sun all day, a hot shower can dry your skin even more. Moreover, hot water opens pores and stimulates excess sebum production, leading to further irritation and breakouts. A cool shower, however, not only cools you but rinses away the sweat that may cause an acne breakout and tightens pores.

3. Wear sunscreen

This is a no-brainer. The number one cause of skin damage and premature aging is sun exposure. Be sure to apply a high-SPF facial lotion, such as LaserAway Beauty BFF SPF 50+ Broad Spectrum Sunscreen, to your face and one for your body before going outside. Reapply every 90 minutes while you’re outdoors.

4. Exfoliate your skin

Because your skin is prone to creating more oil and likely to become congested during the summer months, exfoliation is key. Use lactic acid and glycolic acid-based products, like a body wash and facial pads, to gently exfoliate the skin while tightening pores.

5. Eat lots of fruit

Melons and other summer fruit are naturally hydrating. Try adding fruit to water for an extra kick. Fruits also contain essential vitamins and antioxidants you need for a dewy complexion. In fact, did you know that berries can actually boost your skin’s own SPF?

6. Fight acne

In warmer months, acne can get out of control fast due to excessive sweating. And zits can crop up in embarrassing spots, like on your butt. To combat this, wash all over with a body wash containing salicylic acid. Then at night, wipe your skin with some anti-blemish pads.

7. Use eye cream

Summer weather can be especially harsh on the delicate skin around your eyes, so use eye cream daily. Look for kinds that contain antioxidants to help prevent and even reverse wrinkles, like LaserAway Beauty Eye Opener Multi-Corrective Eye Serum which protects skin from free radical damage.

8. Drink enough water

Higher temperatures and lots of sun can lead to dehydration. Be sure to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily to help maintain the moisture balance of your body and skin. Carry around a reusable water bottle to help you remember and ensure you have access to water no matter where you are.

9. Soothe sunburns

You may forget to apply or reapply sunblock and end up with a sunburn. When this happens, super soothing botanicals and cooling gels can help prevent peeling and reduce redness and inflammation. Apply these all over sunburned areas, preferably at the first sign of a pink glow.
