How to protect your skin this summer

Your skin needs to be treated differently in summer. With all the sunshine come heat and UV rays. And these can do a number on you. Here are nine ways you can protect your skin in summer.

1. Use lip balm

Your lips are delicate. The sun dries them out. Keep them looking luscious by applying all-natural lip balm. Don’t be afraid to slather it on. And keep doing so throughout the day. Make sure your lip balm has an SPF of 15 or greater.

2. Take cold showers

It’s strange but true: A hot shower after you’ve been in the sun can dry your skin out even more. A cold shower also cools you and rinses away sweat that may cause an acne breakout.

3. Exfoliate your skin

Use a scrub on dry skin before you shower. Be sure to get your knees and elbows. After you shower put on a rich body oil. This will keep your skin silky soft.

4. Eat lots of fruit

Melons and other summer fruit are naturally hydrating. They also contain vitamins and antioxidants you need for a dewy complexion. In fact, melons can actually boost your skin’s own SPF.

5. Fight acne

In warmer months acne can get out of control — fast. And zits can crop up in embarrassing spots. To combat this, wash all over with an antibacterial body wash. Then at night, wipe your skin with some anti-blemish pads.

6. Use eye cream

Summer weather can be especially harsh on the delicate skin around your eyes, so use eye cream daily. Look for kinds that contain antioxidants to help prevent and even reverse wrinkles.

7. Wear sunscreen

This is a no-brainer. The number one cause of premature aging is sun exposure. Be sure to apply a high-SPF lotion to both your face and body before going outside. Reapply it every 90 minutes while you’re outdoors.

8. Drink enough water

Higher temperatures and lots of sun can lead to dehydration. Be sure to drink at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day to help maintain the moisture balance of your body and skin.

9. Soothe sunburns

You may forget to apply or reapply sunblock and end up with a sunburn. When this happens, super soothing botanicals and cooling gels can help prevent peeling as well as reduce redness and inflammation. Apply these all over sunburned areas, preferably at the first sign of a pink glow.
