An Aesthetic Dermatologist Shares How to Get Rid of Neck Wrinkles with Neuromodulators

Here’s to get rid of neck wrinkles with neuromodulator injections

Ever noticed creases and folds on your neck area? Well, these necklines and wrinkles are a natural part of aging, and they’re caused by skin losing elasticity and being exposed to the sun over time. Aesthetic nurse practitioner Morgan Wolf, who works at LaserAway, elaborates, “The platysma (the main neck muscle) stretches from our collarbone to the lower portion of our jawbone, and it is, in large part, responsible for how our neck looks.” Luckily, the field of aesthetic dermatology now has a simple solution — non-invasive neuromodulators like Botox and Xeomin can improve the appearance of neck wrinkles. Chief Medical Officer and celebrity dermatologist Dr. Will Kirby and his clinical team at LaserAway gave Life & Style Magazine the lowdown on how this treatment option works.

What are Xeomin and Botox?

According to Dr. Will Kirby, Xeomin and Botox are neuromodulators “commonly associated with erasing fine lines and wrinkles on the face, such as crow’s feet, vertical frown lines, and horizontal forehead lines.” But, these neuromodulators can also be “extremely effective for reducing the appearance of the platysmal bands that affect the neck.”

Botox and Xeomin are both neurotoxins that attach to nerve endings in muscles, blocking acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for triggering muscle contractions. Neuromodulator injections temporarily relax the muscles that underlie and cause neck wrinkles. Botox and Xeomin both have the ability to minimize or slow the progression of jowls.

After receiving injections, most patients notice results within three to seven days as the neuromodulator begins to settle into the injection site, typically lasting three to four months, depending on the dosage received. Once lines and wrinkles reappear and muscle contractions return, the area will need to be treated again. Over time, and with repetitive treatments, however, those lines and wrinkles will appear less severe as Botox and Xeomin decrease the strength of the muscle.

Who is the ideal candidate?

Botox and Xeomin treatments in the neck area are ideal for anyone who wants to eliminate lines appearing on the neck due to the platysmal muscle. LaserAway aesthetic nurse practitioner Emily Perbellini says, “In some people, the platysma becomes weaker, but in others, as it stretches over time, it becomes hypertrophied and stronger…when this muscle is under more tension, it gradually thickens, making bands more evident.” Neuromodulators, when implemented early and in the right patient, can delay certain signs of neck aging that are directly related to muscle activity. But, if patients wait too long to address neck issues, they may eventually require invasive neck lift surgery.

LaserAway aesthetic nurse Corey Ordoyne adds, “Middle-aged and young people wanting to quiet dynamic neck bands are absolute no-brainer candidates for injectable neuromodulator neck treatments! Excellent candidates who see the biggest payoff from neck Xeomin and Botox cosmetic injections tend to have relatively firm skin, small amounts of excess fat, minimal muscle laxity, and well-defined platysmal neck bands.”
