Treatment Diary: I Tried Potenza™ RF Microneedling

Discover why LaserAway’s new Potenza™ RF Microneedling is a game changer for your skin

When you have resilient skin and an appetite for curiosity, trying out every new skincare treatment is just a fact of life. So when I found out that LaserAway was now offering Potenza™ RF Microneedling, I knew I had to see what it was about. In addition to reading my very helpful pre-treatment materials, I also did some light googling ahead of time, so I had some idea of what to expect. That said, the information I found online was often a bit contradictory, so I was eager to try this treatment out first person.

Before I get into what my experience was like, here’s a little background on Potenza™: As far as treatments go, radiofrequency microneedling (also known as RFM) is pretty recent technology. Although it sounds particularly high-tech, it actually features quite simple science. In short, it combines two things: low-energy electromagnetic waves via radiofrequency with classic microneedling, which create small “controlled injuries” to promote collagen production and cellular turnover in the skin.

Together, these treatments can have an incredible impact, by heating and penetrating the deeper layers of your skin. If you’re familiar with Clear and Brilliant, it’s a bit like that, but even more intense. You’ll find that your skin feels firmer and appears smoother, with a reduction in visible imperfections. While you might notice some improvement after one session, LaserAway recommends 3-6 sessions for best results. But back to my first-hand experience…

Upon arriving at the LaserAway location in Brooklyn Heights, I was introduced to my medical provider, Amanda, who was a Registered Nurse. She was easy to talk to and answered my most pressing questions as she set me up for the treatment. After signing consent forms, confirming that I wasn’t pregnant or breastfeeding, and taking “before” photos, she let me know that the procedure would take 20-45 minutes, at the most.

Step 1: Cleanse

Amanda handed me a couple of LaserAway Beauty City Cloths to take off the makeup and sunscreen that I’d already had on my face. She also confirmed that I didn’t have any tattooed makeup or microbladed eyebrows.

Step 2: Numb

Amanda helped me cover my face in numbing cream. I can be a little sensitive to pain, so I knew I’d need a thick layer covering my entire face. We left the cream on my face for 25-30 minutes and then removed it with a wipe.

Step 3: Treatment

Next, Amanda moved the Potenza™ device—which kind of looks like a toothbrush or a pen—all over my face, moving from my forehead to my nose and then to my cheekbones, as it “stamped” the skin. I was anxious that the treatment would hurt and at times, each “zap” felt like a little jolt, for the most part, I really felt no discomfort whatsoever. Because I was treating the entirety of my face, the session took up the full 45 minutes. When Amanda was done working on my skin, I noticed it was a little flushed—but not so much that I felt embarrassed to be out and about in the world.

Step 4: Hydrate

Lastly, Amanda treated me to a flood of hydration, by way of a LaserAway Beauty Jetsetter Hydroserum Face Mask. This helped keep my inflammation under control while minimizing recovery time.

In conclusion: Would I do Potenza™ RF Microneedling again? Absolutely—particularly because I’m eager to see the results that come from multiple treatments. It was comfortable, effective and made my skin feel like new!
