Lip Augmentation 101: Your Guide to Lip Fillers

What are lip fillers?

Lip augmentation is one of the most popular aesthetic dermatological procedures in the U.S., and for good reasons, too. Many opt for lip fillers because they are a minimally invasive and temporary way to increase volume and enhance the shape of lips. Some, but not all, are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that is highly effective at plumping lips. Want to learn more about lip fillers? Read on.

Why choose hyaluronic acid based fillers?

Compared to permanent fillers that are made from substances like polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and calcium hydroxylapatite, some temporary fillers like Juvéderm are made from hyaluronic acid based, which is a natural substance found in the body that keeps your skin hydrated. Hyaluronic acid based fillers produce immediate results that can last up to two years, depending on the formulation. Because hyaluronic acid can bind to up to 1,000 times its weight in water, it can safely and effectively restore volume to your lips, making your pout plumper with natural-looking results.

How much filler do I need?

How much filler you in your lips need all depends on your aesthetic goals. You may need half a syringe to one syringe of Juvéderm for thin lips to add volume and enhance the shape. If you decide on half a syringe, this will provide a more subtle, natural-looking boost, whereas a full syringe will provide a more noticeably fuller shape. One of the most common hyaluronic acid based lip fillers is Juvéderm Ultra XC, with results lasting between six to 12 months.

As a general rule of thumb, don’t expect to walk away with giant lips after one session. Instead, aim to increase the size of your lips gradually for the most natural-looking results. Give your lips time to adapt to the newly placed filler and settle into their natural state before deciding if you want more product. If you’re not sure how much product you want, you can always add in a little bit at a time, look in the mirror, and add more as needed.

What’s it like getting lip filler?

The actual injection part only takes a few minutes. Juvéderm formulations are infused with lidocaine, which is an anesthetic that helps minimize discomfort once injected. Once your lips are done, you’ll want to follow any post-care instructions to a tee. You may notice potential swelling and bruising right after your treatment, but this is totally normal.

One of the best things about Juvéderm is that it offers instant results — you’ll notice fuller lips directly after your treatment. And the results keep improving until the product fully settles in after about two weeks. It’ll be time to schedule another appointment six to 12 months later.
