Mobile games to play with friends

Like so many things, hosting an in-person game night with your friends just isn't going to happen anytime soon. But that doesn't mean you can't get a little bit creative and recreate the experience through a video chat app from the safety of your own home. Whether you usually bond over a game of competitive Scrabble or love going to your favorite weekly trivia night together, here are 10 apps that can help you stay connected with all your friends during the pandemic:

1. Words With Friends

Words With Friends is essentially a variation of Scrabble that you can play on your phone. You can invite your friends to play with you, and you'll receive notifications when it's your turn to create a word. Friends aren't free to play with you? You can also play with strangers using the app's random opponent matchmaking tool.

2. Kahoot!

Love creating your own trivia? Kahoot! enables you to create quizzes with multiple choice or true and false answers. With the free version of the app, you can invite up to 10 friends to play per game.

3. Truth or Dare?

Do you and your friends like more adventurous games? Then Truth or Dare? might be just the thing for you. You can pick from the "easy, medium, or extreme" levels within the game and even turn it into a fun Saturday night drinking game.

4. Scrabble GO

Scrabble is a classic game and has been around for more than 80 years. But game company Scopely recently partnered with Mattel and Hasbro to launch the mobile game Scrabble GO in March 2020. This new version is very similar to the original board game and can be played remotely with friends by connecting the app to your Facebook account or adding them through your phone.

5. Yahtzee with Buddies

Did you grow up playing Yahtzee with your friends? The mobile version allows you to play it with friends and family no matter where they are. To play with a friend, all you need to do is add them to your account or connect them through your Facebook account.

6. Uno

The app version of this game offers many fun and colorful variations, but you can still play the original game in "classic mode" with a group of friends remotely. You can invite friends to play directly through the app, which will send them invites via text, WhatsApp, or Slack.

7. QuizUp

Love Trivial Pursuit? Well, you're in luck. QuizUp features themed rounds of questions about a variety of different topics, from Game of Thrones to Disney to world geography. You can easily invite your friends to play, or the app can also match you up with random opponents from around the world.

8. Songpop 2

If you and your friends miss going to concerts and singing karaoke, then Songpop 2 might be just what you need. You essentially compete among your friends to see who can guess songs the fastest from artists like Taylor Swift, Drake, Queen, and Selena Gomez.

9. Boggle With Friends

Remember the classic game, Boggle? The mobile version is just like the original version, but the app keeps score for you. It allows you to invite all your friends to join for a game or two, or you can also play random opponents online.

10. Clue

Who doesn't love Clue?? The goal of the app version of this murder mystery board game is the same: to find who the murderer is. Was it Colonel Mustard in the kitchen with a knife? Or Miss Scarlet in the ballroom with a gun? You have the option of either creating a multiplayer game with your friends and family or playing it alone.
