5 Expert Tips for Protecting Your Skin Against the Sun

How to Protect Your Skin from the Sun

It’s easy to accumulate sun damage over time, especially if you forget to apply sunscreen each time before going out in the sun. But, prolonged sun exposure can lead to premature aging  who needs that? Here are five expert tips for protecting your skin against the sun:

1. Work sunscreen into your routine

The cornerstone of any proper skincare routine is sun protection! Look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with SPF 30 or higher, and apply it liberally to reap the full benefits any time you go outside (even when it’s not sunny!). Pro tip: Try a sunscreen that performs double-duty! This sun protector from LaserAway Beauty has both hydrating and skin tone-evening benefits, basically serving as a BB cream.

If you have sensitive skin, then you should reach for baby sunscreens that use physical blockers, such as zinc oxide, instead of chemical ones, which can be irritating.

2. Apply sunscreen properly

While spray sunscreens might seem super convenient, most dermatologists agree that people don’t rub in spray formulas properly, leaving them with streaky protection. To properly apply spray sunscreens, hold the can an inch away from your skin, and then spray section-by-section until your skin glistens. Finally, blend it all in using your hands.

3. Reapply sunscreen regularly

You should toss sunscreen into all of your bags so you’ll always have protection on hand. Be sure to reapply sunblock every two hours. Sunscreen sticks won’t spill, and brush-on mineral powder is great for midday touch-ups over makeup.

4. Wear sun-protective clothing

To protect your skin thoroughly from UVA and UVB rays, wear sun-protective clothing whenever outside. There are lots of shirts on the market that have an ultraviolet protective factor of 50, meaning they block nearly 98 percent of UV rays.

5. Incorporate hats and sun shades

If you’re planning on long periods of sun exposure, wear a wide-brimmed hat and large sunglasses. This goes for the car, too! Whether you’re in the driver’s seat or sitting shotgun, a sun shade can help to alleviate the cumulative sun damage we’re exposed to every time we’re stuck in traffic.

Protect your skin rain or shine

No matter the weather  rain or shine  you should always protect your skin by applying sunscreen to all exposed areas. Remember to reapply sunscreen every two hours. This will help to protect against premature aging and skin cancer.

For skin that’s already sun-distressed, consider a visit to your local LaserAway. A free, no-obligation consultation can help you assess what kind of laser facial treatments or dermatologist-developed skincare products may be right for your skin type.
