How to Cover Bruises from Filler and Botox Injections

Your guide to covering up post-injectable bruising

Injectables like BotoxXeomin, and Juvéderm are becoming more and more prominent among beauty maintenance rituals around the globe. But a little post-injection bruising is totally normal and expected. It’s no big deal though when you know a few tricks for covering it up. If you love the results you can get with injectables, here’s how you can hide any bruising that may come with treatment.

First, you have to neutralize the problem

A neutralizing concealer can cover up any bruise. Neutralizing colors are those which appear opposite each other on the color wheel: Green neutralizes red, for example, and blue neutralizes orange. You’ll want to follow application of the concealer with some foundation. This will cover the bruise completely.

Your bruise must be free of cuts, nicks, and stitches. Choose a hypoallergenic concealer with a yellow base; the hue offsets blue discoloration. But if your bruise is red, you’ll want to use a green concealer. If your bruise is brown, you’ll want to use a white concealer. And if your bruise is yellow, you’ll want to use a lavender-colored concealer. Gently apply the concealer to the bruised area and blend. Place foundation over the concealer and follow with a translucent powder. It’s that simple.

Then, you “makeup” a few tricks

Used cleverly, cosmetics can draw attention away from facial bruises. Here are two techniques to help mask any bruising even further:

Highlighting

An innovative makeup trick that helps draw attention to other features of your face, highlighting makes imperfections less apparent. You can highlight your cheekbones, the inside portion of your eyelids, and the area below your eyebrows with light, shiny powder.

Accenting

Accenting enhances other facial features and draws attention from imperfections. You can use eyeliner and eyeshadow to draw attention to your eyes or wear a bold lipstick to draw attention to your lips. You should use these techniques in conjunction with the concealer techniques above.

How to minimize bruising altogether

Though bruising is an expected outcome from injectables, there are a few things you can do to help minimize it.

Before your appointment, you’ll want to avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours. Over-the-counter medications or herbal supplements can sometimes affect coagulation, but it’s always best to check in with your medical provider first before starting or stopping any blood-thinning medications.

During your treatment, ice packs or topical numbing cream may be recommended, which can help to constrict blood vessels and minimize bruising, depending on the treatment being performed.

Take a shot at some great injectables

If you’re curious about injectables, check out Botox or Xeomin, two neuromodulators that can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming, all while producing natural results that last for months.

If you’re looking for volume, Juvéderm is an innovative hyaluronic acid-based filler that adds volume and contour to lips, cheeks, and nasolabial folds, in addition to smoothing fine lines. Better yet—the results last up to two years!
