The 7 Best Eco-Friendly Beauty Brands to Shop for Earth Day

Sustainable beauty brands to support

According to the Plastic Pollution Coalition, in 2018, almost 7.9 billion units of rigid plastic were created in the US alone just for beauty and personal care products. Even though this problem is getting worse overall, many beauty brands are working toward creating a future with less pollution. Since Earth Day is coming up, now’s a good time to consider the environmental impact of products you typically purchase. If you’re unsure where to start, check out these seven sustainable beauty brands that are dedicated to reducing their eco-footprint:

1. Nécessaire

Nécessaire sells bath and body products that are responsibly made — they are free of petrochemicals, synthetic dyes, and phthalates and biodegradable. Nécessaire is also Climate Neutral Certified, which means the company estimates its carbon footprint for the year and offsets it using verified carbon credits. What’s more, Nécessaire is actively trying to reduce its emissions by implementing a Reduction Action Plan.

2. Aether Beauty

Aether Beauty is an eco-friendly, vegan cosmetics brand that uses organic, fair-trade, and non-GMO ingredients wherever possible. They also launched the industry’s first zero-waste eyeshadow palette, and all of their products can be recycled through Pact Collective.

3. Lush

Lush produces handmade bath and body products. They are dedicated to using lower-carbon sources in their operations. Lush also employs reusable packaging, and the products in its Naked line are package-free. Products in pots and bottles are sold in 100% post-consumer plastic and can be recycled.

4. Ilia Cosmetics

Ilia Cosmetics is a makeup brand with the sole mission of protecting the earth. Not only does Ilia use sustainable ingredients, but the company also donates money to help fight deforestation and encourages US-based customers to mail in up to 10 empty beauty products to them per month through their Makeup Recycling Program to break down responsibly.

5. LaserAway Beauty

All LaserAway Beauty skincare products are 100% vegan and are formulated without parabens, phthalates, artificial colors, alcohol, and sulfates. These ingredients are harmful to the planet and have been linked to ecological harm, especially marine life. LaserAway Beauty’s City Cloths Gentle Cleansing & Makeup Remover Wipes are also completely biodegradable.

6. Superzero

Superhero is a zero-waste hair care product line that sells shampoo bars, conditioners, and hand soaps. Its entire product line doesn’t use any plastics at all. Instead, Superhero uses recycled and recyclable cardboard boxes. Its products are free of sulfates, silicones, phthalates, DEA, parabens, and synthetic fragrances.

7. Maison Louis Marie

Maison Louis Marie crafts vegan, cruelty-free fragrances without toxic ingredients. The company uses 100% recycled and recyclable fiberboard and FSC certified paper in all of its gift boxes. Maison Louis Marie is also a member of 1% for the Planet, a non-profit membership that helps fund environmental causes.
