Here's How to Dodge Them
Commercial hair dyes often contain dangerous chemicals that can cause allergic reactions. In fact, an allergy to hair dyes "can prove to be just as serious as a nut or shellfish allergy," Health.com reports.
Several chemicals found in conventional hair dyes you should avoid at all costs. They can lead to allergic reactions and skin irritations, and some have even been linked to cancer.
These hair-dye chemicals are defo no-no's
1. Paraphenylenediamine (PPD)
Made from coal tar, PPD is used as a dye for dark color shades. It is also used as a wood preservative, and contact with skin should be avoided. Research has shown that PPD in combination with hydrogen peroxide is highly toxic.
2. Hydrogen peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide is used to remove your natural color before applying hair color. It changes the structure of hair, making it brittle and lackluster.
Ammonia opens up the hair’s cuticle so that dyes can penetrate the shaft of the hair. It has the potential to cause caustic burns and lung irritation.
4. DMDM Hydantoin
A preservative that releases formaldehyde, DMDM hydantoin "may cause tissue irritation and affect the immune system," The Epoch Times reports. This chemical is also found in floor waxes, latex paints, and adhesives.
Parabens like methylparabens and propylparabens are commonly found in hair care products and produce allergies and skin irritation.
6. Lead acetate
"Lead acetate hair dyes are the minority of hair colorings on the market," CNN reports, "and are used in place of organic dyes because they work gradually." A color additive for darker colors, lead acetate causes anemia and neurological problems.
Resorcinol is a toxic dye. "It is classified by the European Union as harmful, irritant to eyes and skin and dangerous for the environment," Eluxe reports. "It may also disrupt hormonal function, and lead to hypothyroidism."
You can easily avoid these chemicals by using all natural hair colorants instead.
