Filled with chemicals and colorants, the hair masks you buy in drugstores and salons rob your hair of bounce and shine. Which means they also rob you of money.

With some common ingredients you can make a restorative mask at home, no matter your hair type. A DIY hair mask is better for your hair -- and your pocketbook. (If you have longer hair, double the recipe amounts.)

Crazy-Sexy Hair Unmasked

An effective hair mask makes it so you no longer have to mask dry, damaged hair. Hair gets this way when your scalp doesn’t make enough oil, or when your hair can’t lock in moisture.

Permed and naturally curly hair tends to be drier. But sometimes the things you do can also have this effect. You want to avoid shampooing, curling, straightening, and blow-drying your hair too often. And you should avoid clarifying shampoos, dyes, perms, and relaxers.

On the proactive side, you can wash your hair less frequently and begin using alcohol-free versions of your favorite styling products.

And, when all else fails, there are DIY hair masks like the ones above to save the day.
