How to improve your mental health
May marks Mental Health Awareness Month. As we all know, physical health is important. But, your mental well-being is just as important. Physical and mental wellness go hand-in-hand, which is why it’s so crucial to learn how to sustain, improve, and maintain mental wellness to feel your best. Psychology expert and life coach Dr. Cheyenne Bryant shares her three expert tips for boosting your mental health:
1. Meditate, meditate, meditate!
Why do mental health professionals always seem to recommend meditation? Because it centers you, breaks down the resistance, and alleviates stress, anxiety, and depression. All of these regular benefits of meditation will drastically improve your mental health and well-being. All it takes is meditating for 15 minutes a day — either right when you wake up, during the day or before going to bed.
2. Commit to yourself
There is power in commitment. Once you commit to something, that means you’re going to see it through, even when you don’t feel like doing it. You should commit to your overall health, which means doing the work to get the results you want. What does this look like? Committing to your mental health might involve carving out time to meditate, seeing a therapist regularly, giving yourself space to process emotions, and surrounding yourself with supportive people.
3. Ask for help
Everyone needs help sometimes. This is especially true when you feel like you might need extra support around your mental health. Where should you go for help? You can always turn to family and friends. While they’re a great resource, they aren’t a substitute for seeking professional help. Life coaches, psychologists, and mental health therapists are trained professionals that can help you alleviate stress from depression and anxiety, cope with daily stressors, and teach you tools to help you process and overcome obstacles.
