How to get soft, kissable lips
February is here — and love is in the cold, dry winter air. Want to go in for steamy makeout sessions this Valentine's Day with your beau but notice that your lips are more chapped and drier than usual? Well, you're in luck. Here are the seven best-kept secrets for totally kissable lips (so you never have to worry again):
1. Make your own lip scrub
Hate having dry, flakey lips? It's time to exfoliate them! Create your own lip scrub by mixing a pinch of sugar with some olive oil. Then rub the mixture onto lips using small, circular motions. Rinse and apply a hydrating lip balm for kissably soft lips. You can do this up to twice a week.
2. Always carry lip balm
Lip balm is crucial since it helps combat dry lips by hydrating and protecting them. Look for a lip balm that contains both SPF and emollients, such as Kiehl's Butterstick Lip Treatment SPF 30. Be sure to stash lip balm in every pocket and purse so you'll always have it on hand.
3. Choose lip glosses over lipsticks
Ditch matte lipsticks in favor of lip glosses that are formulated with heavy-duty moisturizers. Why? Because matte lipsticks tend to dry out lips, causing the color to flake off easily. You'll also be less likely to lick your lips while wearing lip glosses, so your lips won't become as dry. Choose a lip gloss, like LaserAway Beauty Girl Boss Plump & Shine Lip Lacquer, that contains vitamin E, botanical extracts, and peptides to moisturize and plump lips.
4. Apply petroleum jelly to lips overnight
To ensure your lips are super smooth right when you wake up, apply petroleum jelly to them before bed. This will help to seal in moisture and form a protective barrier on the surface of the lips. Many dermatologists rave about Aquaphor Healing Ointment and Vaseline, both of which are made from petroleum jelly.
5. Don't pick at your lips
Whatever you do, don't ever pick at the flakes on chapped lips. It'll only damage lips since peeling off this skin is like peeling off a scab before it's ready to go. Picking causes excess dryness, prolonging healing.
6. Use hydrocortisone cream
Are your lips super dry and chapped? Then reach for hydrocortisone cream and apply it to lips. Why? Because hydrocortisone cream decreases inflammation while promoting healing.
7. Achieve fuller lips with essential oils
To plump up lips instantly and temporarily, mix a few drops of cinnamon or peppermint oil with Aquaphor and rub on lips. Both these essential oils stimulate blood flow to increase the size of lips. Be prepared to feel a little tingling.
Getting your lips into tiptop shape all comes down to exfoliating them regularly, using the right lip products, and avoiding picking at flakes. Follow the above tips, and your dry, chapped lips will soon become ultra-soft and kissable — just in time for Valentine's Day!
