7 Hair Dye Chemical To Avoid

The 7 dye chemicals that fry your hair & endanger your health

The convenience of commercial hair dye can’t be beaten. But boxed dyes often contain dangerous chemicals that can cause allergic reactions and skin irritations, and some have even been linked to cancer. If you’re looking for a quick, safe dye job, avoid these chemicals at all costs:

Skip these hair dye chemicals

1. Paraphenylenediamine (PPD)

Made from coal tar, PPD is used as a dye for dark color shades. It is also used as a wood preservative, and contact with skin should be avoided. Research has shown that PPD in combination with hydrogen peroxide is highly toxic.

2. Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is used to remove your natural color before applying hair color. It changes the structure of hair, making it brittle and lackluster.

3. Ammonia

Ammonia opens up the hair’s cuticle so that dyes can penetrate the shaft of the hair. It has the potential to cause caustic burns and lung irritation.

4. DMDM Hydantoin

A preservative that releases formaldehyde, DMDM hydantoin can cause tissue irritation and affect the immune system. This chemical is also found in floor waxes, latex paints, and adhesives.

5. Parabens

Parabens like methylparabens and propylparabens are commonly found in hair care products and produce allergies and skin irritation.

6. Lead acetate

Lead acetate hair dyes are typically used in place of organic dyes because they work gradually. A color additive for darker colors, lead acetate causes anemia and neurological problems.

7. Resorcinol

Resorcinol is a toxic dye. It’s classified by the European Union as a harmful irritant to eyes and skin, as well as dangerous for the environment. Resorcinol can disrupt hormonal function, and lead to hypothyroidism.

Live to dye another day

With so many alternatives available on the market today, there’s no need to risk your beautiful tresses by using hair dyes with harmful ingredients. Ditch these seven chemicals and extend the life of your colored hair.
