How Often Should Couples Have Sex?

How Much Sex Should You Have

You’ve been in a relationship for a long time. Although you might remember the early days of your relationship fondly — especially all the crazy sex — that aspect has tapered off gradually. Now, maybe you and your partner have sex once or twice a week at most. But, how often should you be having sex in a serious, long-term relationship?

How much sex you should have depends
There's no right or wrong answer

Healthy sex life is crucial to sustaining a serious romantic relationship. But, when it comes to the frequency of sex, there’s no right or wrong answer. Some couples have super high sex drives while others have lower ones. And sometimes circumstances can get in the way of sexy time, too.

It’s essential to carve out time and prioritize regular sex in a relationship. It can strengthen your bond with your partner and keep a relationship healthy. Most couples in long-term relationships typically have sex once a week. This frequency allows couples to maintain an intimate connection and gives the feeling of having an active sex life without it feeling like a routine. Some couples have sex several times a week, but a lot of studies show that there’s no difference in terms of sexual satisfaction and happiness.

The most stable and happiest couples have sex as often as they want to have sex. If you feel as though you’re not having enough sex in your relationship, don’t be afraid to talk to your partner about it.

Quality of sex versus the quantity of sex

Quality versus quantity

When it comes to sex, the quality of sex is more important than the frequency. You should be able to express your sexual desires freely in your relationship, and safely explore your sexuality with your partner. During sex, it’s important to feel emotionally connected as well. If you want to spice up your sex life, just let your partner know.

Communicating about sex is key Communication is key

Good communication — not necessarily sex — is the most critical aspect of a healthy relationship. If you are feeling unfulfilled in your relationship, have an open conversation with your partner. Remember that, even though there is no right answer regarding how much you should be having sex in a relationship, it’s crucial that you are intimate with your partner regularly.
